We’re always up to date our jeeps tires, We Compare Toyo Open Country AT3 Vs Nitto Terra Grappler and here is our Complete Comparison Review of Toyo Open Country AT3 Vs Nitto Terra Grappler.
AT tires provide traction in rough terrain while still offering decent street performance. Due to their off-road design, these tires have a relatively large footprint, so they’ll be visible on the vehicle they’re mounted on.
To give you a complete review, we have selected Nitto Terra Grappler G2 and Toyo Open Country AT III to compare their features.
Comparing Toyo Open Country AT3 Vs Nitto Terra Grappler
Nitto Terra Grappler G2 is an all-terrain tire with an aggressive tread pattern. Due to their high profile, these tires appear less sleek when mounted on vehicles.
Nitto Terra Grappler G2 all-terrain tires are designed for driving on or off-road and in muddy conditions. The tread pattern features deep sipes and three large grooves that enhance the tire’s traction both on and off-road.
Unique tread patterns on the tire shoulders reduce friction and increase traction in wet and muddy conditions. The Nitto Terra Grappler G2 also features “Coupling joints” in the tread that prevent uneven wear. Lastly, the tire has a “Variable pitch tread design,” which minimizes vibrations thanks to its unique sipe positioning.
The Toyo Open Country is an all-terrain tire designed for a variety of driving conditions. S-shaped tread pattern ensures optimum grip in both on- and off-road conditions.
By now, you may have noticed a trend with these two tires. Both tires have aggressive tread patterns that improve traction in off-road applications, but they sacrifice some style for this functionality.
If you are looking to put these tires on a bigger truck or SUV, you may want to consider the Nitto Terra Grappler G2, as it will not look out of place on larger vehicles.
Comparison of dry traction
Open Country AT III has increased block rigidity and a specially designed optimized pattern to increase dry traction, handling and reduce braking distance.
For exceptional handling, the open country tread has a more evenly distributed void area. Terra Grappler, on the other hand, is equipped with reinforced coupling joints for improved handling, control, and performance on dry terrain.
Off-Road Performance Comparison
As we mentioned earlier, traction and off-road performance are two of the most crucial characteristics of an AT tire. Toyo and Nitto have both addressed these issues so well that either of them can make your adventure worthwhile.
The open country ATIII features staggered shoulder lugs for enhanced off-road performance, while the evenly distributed void area keeps its shape under off-road conditions and at high speeds. ATIII’s S-shaped tread compound gives it excellent off-road traction.
Terra Grappler G2 is superior to open country. It offers both on-road and off-road traction. As a result, it provides you with excellent traction and handling on rough surfaces without sacrificing rigidity.
Traction and hydroplaning resistance in wet conditions
A tire that is AT must be able to cope with weather and road conditions. Open country tires feature multi-wave sipes that are deeper than A/T tires. ATIII tires offer excellent wet traction. In contrast, the G2 has full-depth sipes, which maintain its wet handling and aquaplaning properties.
The open country tread has lateral grooves that help prevent hydroplaning by quickly removing water and debris from within. Nitto claims that the full depth sipes maintain wet traction despite the setting in of treadwear, but we observed a decline when the treadwear reached 20,0000 miles.

Traction due to snow
For A/T tires, snow traction and handling are always a challenge. ATIII features 3D Multi-wave sipes for excellent snow and ice performance. Terra Grappler, on the other hand, features a staggered shoulder design which assists in providing the biting edges necessary for snowy or icy conditions.
ATIII has the lead since it is 3MPSF-awarded, which means that it has been passed through a series of rigorous tests that G2 hasn’t.
Noise Reduction And Comfort
A/T tires compromise on comfort and noise in exchange for excellent performance.
Terra grappler G2 features a variable pitch tread block that reduces noise and makes for a smooth ride. A new tread compound on the ATIII’s open country version, on the other hand, delivers a quiet ride. The S-shaped tread pattern of ATIII provides an increased contact patch, thus ensuring a smooth ride.
In terms of noise reduction and comfort, Terra Grappler G2 beats Toyo Open Country ATIII.
Comparison of treadwear and durability
It would be logical to assume that A/T tires would last shorter than others, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Toyo tires have a more evenly distributed void area that maintains the tire’s rigidity. ATIII is made of a unique cut and chip resistant tread compound that will last for years. For added strength, the AT III features a two-ply polyester casing covered by twin steel belts. To prevent punctures and abrasions, the stone ejectors remove any stones or objects stuck in the tread.
In contrast, the G2 offers excellent durability as well as all-terrain adaptability. The G2 has a link joint connecting its inner and outer treads, which makes it stronger and allows it to maintain its shape while off-roading and driving at high speeds.
Even after tread wear has set in, the full depth sipes help maintain water evacuation capabilities.
Nitto claims that Terra Grappler G2 provides the same wet performance with its full-depth sipes even after treadwear has set in but we disagree. We observed a loss of wet performance after 20,000 miles.
The treadwear warranty on AT III Open Country tires is 65,000 miles on P/Euro-Metric sizes and 50,000 miles on LT and Flotation sizes. Toyota also offers a 45-day or 500-mile trial period. Terra grapple G2, on the other hand, is one of the first A/T tires by Nitto to offer a treadwear guarantee.
Which is the best tire Toyo Open Country AT3 Vs Nitto Terra Grappler?
Both tires were compared in terms of tread and performance, and these tires were tested as per our standards, and we concluded the following:
- In terms of dry traction, Terra Grappler G2 led due to its shorter braking distance and better handling.
- In terms of wet traction and hydroplaning, Open Country ATIII was superior. As the treadwear set in, the G2 lost some wet traction.
- In terms of noise reduction and comfort, we found G2 to be more sophisticated on the road.
- Nitto and Toyo both offer excellent warranties with their respective tires; G2 and AT III had similar treadwear.
