A comparison of traction on ice and snow:
The Blizzak DM V2 utilizes MULTI CELL compound® with NanoProTech® to provide excellent traction on snow and ice, ensuring a safe and comfortable ride.
Hydrophilic properties of Multicell technology ensure excellent traction and a safe ride with a layer of snow around the tread.
The Yokohama IG51V, on the other hand, utilizes Yokohama’s advanced winter tire technology for outstanding performance in cold temperatures on wet, dry, snow-covered, and slushy roads.
Slush and snow are expelled from the central zigzag circumferential grooves by the 3D shaped walls, improving traction and handling.
On icy surfaces, the interlocking and adaptive 3D Sipes enhance grip and stability. To expel slush and snow, slush grooves are placed horizontally.
In our testing, Blizzak DM v 2 outperformed Blizzak DM v 1 for snow and ice traction and braking distances:
- As an example, IceGUARD IG51V has a traction rating of 7 (acceleration time up to 30 km/h in seconds), while Blizzak DM V2 has a traction rating of 6.57 (acceleration time up to 35 km/h in seconds).
- The Ice GUARD IG51v breaks ice at a depth of 25.14 m, while the Blizzak breaks ice at a depth of 23.87 m.
- Ice GUARD IG51v gave us a snow braking distance of 52.5 m (at 80 km/h) while Blizzak stopped after covering 51.6 m on the same route.

Comparison of wet traction:
Winter tires need wet traction to be suitable for ice/snow and wet terrain.
With 3D zigzag sipes and directional tread, the Blizzak DM V2 provides the tire with 15% more biting edges by generating micro-roughness in the tread surface, which improves traction.
V-shaped arrangement is one of the most innovative and obvious features.
Wet traction is competitive with IceGUARD. A dual-action shoulder (the upper part grips snow while the lower part removes water) and circumferential grooves ensure your safety.
According to our testing, Blizzak DM V2 has a wet braking distance of 38.59 meters, while IG51V has a wet braking distance of 40.46 meters.
Comparison of hydroplaning:
In a nutshell, hydroplaning is the loss of traction caused by a thin film of water that could lead to skidding or sliding.

Winter tires sacrifice noise for superior traction on ice or snow. The louder the siping, the greater the noise.
The Bridgestone Blizzak tire is one of Bridgestone’s quietest models. The DM V2’s defining feature is its noiseless ride. DM V2 absorbs impacts easily due to its asymmetric tread pattern.
There are resonance noise attenuated (RENOA) silencer grooves on Bridgestone tires that reduce road noise.
The continuous center tread on the iceGUARD tires makes these tires quieter and reduces cabin noise.
Blizzak, however, was somewhat quieter than iceGUARD.

Two different types of sipes are used in Blizzak DM V2: notched sipes and variable thickness sipes. By combining these sipes with Bridgestone’s MULTICELL technology, DM V2 has reduced rolling resistance by 2.1 % and has a rolling resistance of 17.35 k/t.
The iceGUARD IG51v, however, has the advantage. With a rolling resistance of 16 kg/t, the IG51v uses a Yokohama low-heat generating under-tread compound, and two layers of rubber to increase stiffness.
The iceGUARD IG51v is part of the Yokohama BluEarth series, an environmentally friendly tire series that reduces rolling resistance to increase fuel efficiency.
For winter tires, both Blizzak and iceGUARD performed marvelously in terms of fuel efficiency and rolling resistance.
Comparison of handling:
Snow, ice, wet, and dry terrain are no match for DM V2 and X ICE Snow.
DM V2 shoulder blocks have 20 % more biting edges than its earlier variant, resulting in premium handling. Featuring 3D zigzag sipes, you can enjoy excellent handling over snow and icy terrains. DM V2’s tread features block stiffness for better steering responsiveness.
For enhanced handling and steering responsiveness, IceGUARD IG51v is made from a unique compound that is molded into a directional tread with a variable angle center rib.
Blizzak DM V2 has the clear edge with snow handling of 95.97 seconds, while IG51v has a handling time of 100.5 seconds. A Blizzak DM V2 has an ice handling time of 79.1 seconds, while an iceGUARD has an ice handling time of 79.3 seconds.
Comparison of treadwear and warranties:
In order to enhance tread block stability, Yokohama iceGUARD IG51v uses a high-density reinforced tread compound.
On the X ICE Snow (when worn to 2/32), Yokohama offers a 5-year warranty. “Half mileage for the rear if different from the front must be seen only during the winter months from 9/1 to 4/30.”
Along with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee, it also comes with a one-year uniformity guarantee.
On the other hand, the Blizzak WS DM V2 comes with a 5-year warranty. There is no mileage warranty provided.
The Bridgestone winter or temporary use replacement tire will, however, be replaced by an identical replacement for a prorated retail price if it becomes unusable for whatever reason outside of the manufacturer’s control.
A tread wear indicator is incorporated into the tread of Blizzak tires. Approximately 50% of the tire’s wear indicates that its traction is reaching its limit.

Both Ice GUARD IG51v and Blizzak DM V2 performed well, but if we had to choose one, we would pick Blizzak DM V2.
When compared with Ice GUARD IG51v, Blizzak provided exceptional results for snow, ice, and wet traction, and was exceptionally quiet and comfortable.
Blizzak, however, lacks a bit of rolling resistance and dry traction. Winter tires are intended for use on snow and ice, IceGUARD, however, can also be used on dry roads.
